Vicksburg Convention Center an economic boon for Vicksburg

The annual report of the Vicksburg Convention Center is due to be released this week during the convention center board’s annual meeting.

The report is expected to be a good one. And, why would it not be?

Since its construction, the convention center has grown to be, not only a busy facility, but also one that has proven to be a strong economic engine for Vicksburg.

We will know just how big of a factor the center has played over the past year when the report is released.

But, we can look back at last year’s report for some points of reference.

In the 2014-2015 fiscal year, events hosted at the convention center had an economic impact of $6.5 million, with tax revenues totaling more than $515,000.

Overall, during that fiscal year, events at the center welcomed more than 53,000 visitors, many from outside of Vicksburg and Warren County.

For many, the convention center is simply the building where the annual Miss Mississippi Pageant and Ritz on the River are held. But it is so much more.

In that fiscal year, the facility was used a reported 182 days. If you are wondering, that is an event — of one size or another — being held every other day of the year.

This week, center officials announced plans to invest as much as $800,000 in the center’s escalator system. For those who have been at an event when the center’s aging escalator has taken a break, the need for infrastructure investment is clear.

Also in the past year, the city has invested in roof repairs, cutting down on leaks and water damage.

While the newness of the convention center has worn off, the impact the facility has started to hit its peak.

The investment made by the city of Vicksburg — the staff’s work to recruit new groups, meetings and the management on the part of VenuWorks — has been reflected in the numbers.

The report this week should just be more proof of what we already know. The future of the Vicksburg Convention Center and its impact on Vicksburg is extremely bright.
