Legion offers alternative to trick-or-treat

For little ghouls and goblins, walking from house to house this Halloween might be a tad too much to ask.

To provide a safe place for children ages 3- to 12-years-old to enjoy the spooky holiday this year, American Legion Post 213 and the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 213 teamed up to host its first Halloween Night Out from 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 31.

“Every year we try to give back to the community through events for the adults in the community, but we don’t really get opportunities to do stuff for our children, so we thought this would be a great opportunity to give back to the children,” Michelle Stewart, Post 213’s first vice commander, said. “We would like for the little gremlins to dress up.”

She said the free event, aimed mainly at young children, hopes to provide a safe place for youngsters to enjoy Halloween when they — or their parents — may not be up to hopping from house to house.

“We’re just going to put on a little shindig for the kids who want to come,” she said, noting RSVPing is not required to attend the event.

Halloween Night Out will feature hot dogs, chips, music and — of course — candy goody bags for those who attend, Stewart said.

“Our DJ is a bluesy guy, so he’ll probably be playing blues or Southern soul, but it would be nice if we could track down some kids music,” she said.

She estimated the event has taken about two months of planning, and members of both organizations are still in the process of preparing for the event, including purchasing candy and lots of it.

“We realize that people will probably go trick-or-treating and then come there after or come there first and go trick-or-treating after, but we just wanted to offer a safe environment for them to get some candy,” she said. “Some parents don’t want to go house to house, house to house, and this will be an opportunity, especially for the little babies, to get some candy and listen to some music. They can have the Halloween experience without having to tromp from house to house.”

The event will be held outside American Legion Post 213 at 1618 Main St. For more information, call 601-634-8687.
