St. Al cross country third at state meet

Led by a fifth-place performance by Chandler Roesch and a 10th-place effort from Charlie Gannon, the St. Aloysius boys’ cross country team finished third in the team standings at the MAIS Class AAA state meet on Monday.

Roesch and Gannon both earned All-State honors. Roesch crossed the finish line with a time of 19 minutes, 1.66 seconds, and Gannon in 19:24.13.
Other finishers for St. Al were Adam Eckstein in 20th place, Connor Smith in 27th, Greg Thomas in 29th,

Brayden Roesch in 38th, Mason Ashley in 56th and Alex Bufkin in 69th.
Cathedral won the team title with 42 points, Columbia Academy was second with 51, and St. Al third with 83.

In the boys’ Class AA meet, Porters Chapel Academy’s Bridger Jung finished 11th overall, and the Eagles were eighth in the team standings.

St. Al’s girls’ team finished eighth in the team standings in the Class AAA meet. Sixth-grader Mari Miller Theobald was the top runner, with a 35th-place finish. Iley Baldwin was next in 36th, just a second behind Theobald. Other finishers for the Lady Flashes were Rachel Garmon in 44th place, Madelyn Roesch in 72nd, and Karly Henderson in 91st.

Kirk Academy won the Class AAA championship.

Porters Chapel’s Hannah Lee was 31st in the Class AA meet.

Jacob’s Ladder 5K

The Jacob’s Ladder Turkey Trot 5K and fun run is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 19 in downtown Vicksburg. The race will start on Mulberry Street at 8 a.m. with the 5K run and race walk, and the 1-mile fun run will follow.

The entry fee is $30 for the run and $25 for the walk. The fun run is free. Online registration is available at raceroster.com, jacobsladderlearningcntr.com, or by picking up paper forms at the Purks YMCA. Raceday registration will begin at 7 a.m. on Nov. 19 at Mutual Credit Union on Cherry Street.

VHS track tryouts

Tryouts for Vicksburg High’s varsity boys and girls track teams will be held Nov. 9 and 10, immediately after school at Memorial Stadium. Sign up sheets will be posted in Vicksburg High School. City tennis sessions

The City of Vicksburg’s tennis program will conduct a free youth clinic and practice sessions during the fall. Sessions are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Halls Ferry Park courts. The clinic is for children ages 5 to 18, and there is no charge to participate.
