Chavis Smith scored 15 points, and Warren Central’s boys’ basketball gutted out a tough 36-30 win over Hattiesburg on Saturday afternoon for its first victory of the season.

Raleigh Floyd hit a key layup down the stretch to help the Vikings (1-1) pull it out.

Warren Central’s girls’ team also beat Hattiesburg, 40-28, to complete the sweep. Cocoa Fultz scored 14 points and Amber Gaston had 12 for the Lady Vikes (2-0).

Aniya Sanders added 12 rebounds as the Lady Vikes held Hattiesburg scoreless in the third quarter and outscored the Lady Tigers 18-6 in the fourth.

“I’m glad we are winning, but I’m not satisfied with our overall play. We are leaving too many points on the floor,” said Warren Central coach Jackie Glass, whose team has only scored 85 points total in its two wins. “On a good note, we are learning how to close the game out in our favor when we are struggling.”

Warren Central will play its home opener Tuesday night at 6 against Ridgeland.
