Ron Lindsey’s work is familiar to Vicksburg residents.

The Clinton native has been showing his work at the Attic Gallery for more than three decades and on Friday, a special showing will be held to showcase 40 pieces of the artist’s work.

Ron is moving from the studio where he created those paintings and hundreds more over the last 29 years, gallery owner Lesley Silver said.

“We immediately decided his work he had collected over the years would make a great retrospective. It’s about 40 pieces — mostly paintings. It is extremely rare for us to hang a one person show, but it is more than deserved in this case,” Silver said.

Silver said her connection with Lindsey began when she and her husband, Daniel Boone were hanging a collection of paintings of Vicksburg scenes for a theme show.

“A tall, handsome, young artist interrupted us and introduced himself. He was carrying two paintings of Vicksburg houses which he had recently completed, and wondered if he might be able to slip them into the show at the last minute,” Silver said.

After reviewing the art, the couple decided to include Lindsey, and he is now one of their favorite artist.

“We have a number of his paintings in our personal collection — more than any other artist. His paintings are usually colorful, employing an under painting technique that makes the pieces seem to vibrate and glow,” Boone said.

Lindsey, who is a graduate of Mississippi College with a degree in art and who also has an apprenticeship with Jackson art icons Karl and Mildred Wolfe said he feels like Vicksburg is his second home. “It (Vicksburg) has intrigued me for a long time. I have made hundreds of trips here in search of inspiration and subject matter.”

Friday’s gallery showing will include pieces of Lindsey’s collection from many varied stages he has gone through.

There are experimental portraits evoking the work of Picasso, block prints on canvas and landscapes reminiscent of Cezanne, Silver said.

“Lindsey also has had a long interest in Mexico, and the Attic show includes a number of still lifes featuring objects brought back from his numerous trips there. There are alternate versions of subjects he has treated before, and several studies he created for large commissions,” she said.

The free event will run from 7 to 9 p.m. at the third floor of the Attic Gallery, 1101 Washington St.
