Future of any sports complex depend on flooding, traffic problems being addressed

One important question remains in the city’s attempt to sell Vicksburg residents on the proposed sports complex.

The Fisher Ferry Road location, despite major concerns, has unfortunately been decided.

And, the funding option, which would be mainly based on an increase in food, beverage and lodging fees, appears to be the most widely accepted.

But what many residents along Fisher Ferry and Halls Ferry roads, and those who travel the road to work, want answered now is what improvements are planned for those roads to meet the demands of a successful sports complex?

Those roads at times already are backed up with morning and afternoon traffic and adding the traffic of a large softball or baseball tournament would be a major frustration.

The city has done little to calm the concerns of the public when it comes to these roads and the traffic. It is our hope, when the full plan is unveiled in January that improvements to those roads would be included.

Ignoring that part of the project would be disappointing.

We have strongly endorsed the idea of the sports complex. And, we have supported the basics of the funding plan, as we believe such a funding plan does not place more of a burden on local residents.

But, we expressed strong concerns on the planned complex location because of the flooding concerns of the property and the conditions of the roads leading to the property.

While both problems — potential flooding and the roads — are drawbacks to the selected location, such problems can be fixed, but doing so will come with a cost. We hope January’s unveiling of the plan is as good as promised. The sake of any future referendum and the future of the sports complex depend on it.
