Veterans Day shooting suspect set to make court appearance

A Vicksburg man faces a charge of aggravated assault in the Nov. 11 shooting of another man during an argument at the Top Five Food Mart at the corner of Bowmar Avenue and Drummond Street.

Vicksburg police Capt. Sandra Williams said officers acting on a Crime Stopper tip arrested Melvin Harris, 23, Tuesday at an apartment complex off Lake Hills Drive.

He was being held without bail at the Issaquena County Corrections Facility pending an initial appearance Wednesday in Municipal Court.

Harris is accused of shooting Jonathan Cox, 39, in the leg during an argument that began in the store when Cox argued with a store clerk over change the clerk had given him.

Harris intervened during the argument, and he and Cox went outside the store to continue the discussion. At some point during the exchange, Harris shot him and left on foot.

Monday robbery

An undetermined amount of money was reported stolen about 6:30 p.m. Monday during an armed robbery at convenience store at 1920 Drummond St.

Williams said a man came in with a gun and took the money from the store.
