- AWFUL ACCIDENT: First responders tend to an accident that occurred at the intersection of U.S. 61 South and Iowa Boulevard when a SUV heading across the highway towards Iowa Boulevard was struck by a southbound truck hauling lumber whose brakes reportedly failed.
Two people were injured Thursday in a wreck between a log truck and a sports utility vehicle on U.S. 61 South.
The driver, Kristy Luckett, and her passenger, Jennifer Hymun, were in a GMC Acadia traveling from Pemberton Square Boulevard to Iowa Boulevard by crossing over U.S. 61 South when they were hit in the passenger side by a log truck, Vicksburg police Chief Walter Armstrong said.
The accident occurred around 12:30 p.m. Thursday, and Armstrong said the impact pushed the vehicles into the median.
The truck driver, Clifford Ditto, told investigators his brakes failed as he was traveling south on U.S. 61 South causing him to collide with the SUV, Armstrong said. Ditto was uninjured.
Hymun was airlifted to Jackson, and her condition is unknown.
Armstrong said Thursday her injuries were serious, but did not appear to be life threatening.
Luckett was taken to Merit Health River Region Medical Center where she was treated and released.
