Warren Central got one more wave of recognition for its successful football season.
Seven Vikings earned first-team All-Region 2-6A honors in voting by the league’s coaches, and three others were on the second team. The All-Region awards cap an offseason in which two WC players made the Class 6A All-State team and two were selected to play in the state’s football all-star games.
Making the first-team All-Region 2-6A squad were quarterback Jesse Wilson, offensive linemen Tra Winter and Malcolm Miller, wide receiver Shaun Walton, running back Demarcus Jones, linebacker Kamren Ellis and cornerback Shakee Shaw.
Wilson was one of three quarterbacks picked for the first team, along with Northwest Rankin’s Braden Smith and Madison Central’s Jack Walker. Wilson was listed as an athlete. The senior threw for 1,454 yards and 14 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,001 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Jones led the Vikings with 1,200 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns while averaging 11.7 yards per carry. He was second on the team in receiving with 19 catches for 303 yards and four TDs. He also started at cornerback and played special teams.
Jones played in last week’s Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Game and was a second-team All-State selection as a defensive back.
Walton led the Vikings with 44 receptions for 652 yards and eight touchdowns.
Wilson and Jones were two of Warren Central’s three 1,000-yard rushers — second-team All-Region pick Joe Shorter was the third — which was a tribute to their offensive line. Winter and Miller helped pave the way for the prolific offense and added the All-Region honor to their resumés.
Winter was a second-team All-State selection, and Miller was picked to play in this weekend’s Bernard Blackwell Mississippi all-star game.
On defense, Ellis led the Vikings with 96 tackles and nine tackles for loss. Shaw had six interceptions, forced three fumbles, had 10 pass defenses, and 55 total tackles.
In addition to Shorter, offensive guard Lynn McCay and defensive lineman Caleb Boyett made the All-Region second team.
Clinton quarterback Cam Akers was the Region 2-6A Offensive Player of the Year and Starkville linebacker Willie Gay was the Defensive Player of the Year.
Clinton won the Coaching Staff of the Year award after finishing 14-1 and claiming both the Region 2-6A and Class 6A championships.
