DECATUR, Ala. — Harriet Louise (George) Hendrix, age 74, passed from this life on Dec. 22, 2016, in Wimberley, Texas.

Let us remember that as a follower of Christ, death is not the end. In the Gospel of John, Chapter 14, Jesus promised his disciples that he would prepare a place for them and return to bring them there.  Harriet looked forward to receiving this promise.

Harriet leaves behind her husband of 53 years Jan Dean Hendrix; her two sons, Jon and wife Joyce, Eric and wife Laura; her grandchildren, Alessandro, Fox, Scout, Lena, and Sailor; her brother, Joe George; as well as many friends and family who remember her kindness and care for them.

Harriet is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Harold George and Mildred (Parks) George.

Harriet was born on May 3, 1942, in Lewisburg, Tenn. There, she grew up with her brother Joe before attending Berry College in Georgia.

She began her working career at NASA in Huntsville, Ala. There she met the love of her life, Jan Hendrix.  They were married on Aug. 31, 1963.

Harriet raised her sons Jon and Eric in Vicksburg, where she applied band aids, shuttled kids to soccer and football practice, taught Sunday school, chaperoned school field trips, set up tents in the backyard for sleep-overs, hosted youth group gatherings, and made sure her boys knew how to set a table properly and to say “Ma’am” and “Sir.”

She worked for the Army Corps of Engineers for 25 years as a secretary, a cost accountant, and a budget analyst before retiring in 1997. She was liked and respected by everyone she knew.

In 2000, Harriet and Jan moved to the Texas Hill Country to be near their sons and newly arrived grandchildren. She enjoyed walks on the beaches in Alabama and Florida, rockin’ out to the music of Neil Diamond, and spending time with her grandkids. During her last years, Harriet fought Alzheimer’s disease with grace and valor until the end.

Celebration of Life will be Friday, Dec. 30, 2016, at 11 a.m. at Roselawn Funeral Home in Decatur. Burial will follow at Roselawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the following Alzheimer’s support group would be much appreciated:
