This season gives me a great opportunity to extend my sincere gratitude for allowing me the honor of serving as your mayor for the past three and a half years.
Because of your heartfelt prayers, uplifting encouragement and unwavering support, the City of Vicksburg has been able to move forward in a positive direction with a promising pathway to the future on the horizon. I truly feel that the City of Vicksburg has some of the best and most dedicated employees that can be found. I am extremely grateful and blessed to lead a city alongside men and women who take such pride in providing the highest quality of service to all of our citizens.
I am proud of the unprecedented number of accomplishments that we have been able to achieve in Vicksburg since the beginning of my administration.
As mayor and as the holiday season is now upon us, I reflect upon the many reasons to be thankful.
I am proud that we have a city that practices sound, fiscal management and that is always accountable to the citizens we represent.
I am thankful that we have city employees who are dedicated and committed to providing the highest quality of services to the residents of Vicksburg.
To reward our employees for all of their diligent efforts, we were blessed to be able to give two pay raises and raise the minimum wage during this administration. The health of our employees is an important component to the success of a workforce, and I am thankful we were able to provide an employee medical clinic as well.
Our downtown is thriving because of the growth of new businesses, and we are excited with the infrastructure improvements that have been made thus far, with more projects to come.
With all these accomplishments that I am certainly thankful for, I believe we must continue to be focused on making more improvements that will greatly enhance the quality of life for the citizens of Vicksburg in the future.
We must establish more job creation in the private sector; develop more affordable and moderate housing in the city; continue to work to reduce crime so our citizens and visitors alike can feel safe and secure in our community; and build a sports complex with the goal of increasing tourism and creating a family-friendly atmosphere for everyone to enjoy.
Over the past three and a half years, the City of Vicksburg has made great strides.
I have always been committed to making our government as transparent as it can be.
In addition, I still feel it is critical that we change our obsolete 1912 city charter to ensure for better governmental accountability and oversight.
With your support and prayers, we will continue to progressively move Vicksburg forward so we can compete with any city in our state and nation.
I wish everyone a safe and blessed holiday season and a prosperous New Year! The best is yet to come!
As always, “I am who I am; I am what I am; and I am who and what I am, wherever I am.”
George Flaggs Jr. is mayor of the City of Vicksburg.
