The winter weather coating Central Mississippi in ice and sleet this weekend also put the freeze on the basketball rivalry between Vicksburg High and Warren Central.
Their game, originally scheduled for Saturday afternoon, was rescheduled to Feb. 4, Vicksburg Warren School District athletic director Preston Nailor said. He had originally planned to wait until the morning to make a final decision, but said after consulting with the Warren County Sheriff’s Department opted to make the call on Friday.
The game, the second meeting of the season between the teams, had been scheduled for noon Saturday at Warren Central.
“I didn’t want to wait until the last minute and there be all kinds of confusion. I’d rather everybody be safe,” Nailor said. “As long as we get it in, we’ll be fine.”
St. Aloysius is scheduled to play a home basketball game Saturday evening against Hartfield Academy. St. Al athletic director Mike Jones said that is still a go. The junior varsity games begin at 4 p.m. and the varsity at 6.
The weather also forced the postponement of Vicksburg High’s soccer and basketball games at Ridgeland High School on Friday. The soccer game was rescheduled for Jan. 19 and the basketball game for Feb. 2.
The postponements shook up the schedules of both Vicksburg and Warren Central’s soccer and basketball teams, and put a head-to-head soccer match in jeopardy.
The soccer teams were supposed to play each other Thursday night, but that game was moved to Jan. 19 so Warren Central could add Brandon to the schedule. With the Vicksburg vs. Ridgeland game now rescheduled for Jan. 19, they’ll either have to play an extra game during the busiest time of the season or cancel a non-division game to fit it in before the playoffs begin Jan. 24.
Vicksburg and Warren Central have already played once this season, back on Nov. 17
“We’re probably going to have to move that one or cancel it altogether. Those district games are very important,” Nailor said. “We’re going to have to fit it in, be we’re going to try to find a date to fit it in.”
Basketball season is a couple of weeks longer, which made rescheduling that game a bit easier. Nailor said there were two options — Feb. 4 or Feb. 14. The latter is the weekend before the division tournaments begin, the former near the end of the regular-season division schedule.
Vicksburg will have a few days off before facing Warren Central, but for WC it’ll be the third game of the week. Warren Central plays road games at Clinton on Jan. 31 and Greenville on Feb. 3. It also plays Murrah on Feb. 7.
