Voters have until April 1 to register to vote in the first primary of Vicksburg’s municipal elections, Warren County Circuit Clerk Jan Hyland Daigre said.
“We are handling the registration for the city, so people can come here and register to vote for the municipal primary,” she said. “The city clerk’s office will be open until noon April 1 to accept voter applications and then send them to us and we will register them.”
The first primary is May 2, and is a party primary requiring voters to give a party preference when they come into vote. If needed, a runoff election will be May 16, with the general election June 6. To win the first primary, a candidate must have 50 percent of the total vote plus one more vote.
Vicksburg’s municipal elections will determine the make-up of the city’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen and will decide whether the city will levy a 1-cent sales tax on hotel rooms and food and beverage sales to fund a sports complex on
As of Wednesday, only two candidates have qualified for office, with North Ward Alderman Michael Mayfield and South Ward Alderman Willis Thompson qualifying for re-election on Jan. 3, the first day of qualifying. District 3 Supervisor Charles Selmon announced his candidacy for mayor Tuesday, but has not qualified to run, according to information from the city clerk’s office.
