The second phase of street paving for the South Ward could begin sometime in March, weather permitting, South Ward Alderman Willis Thompson said.

Thompson said the Board of Mayor and Aldermen is expected to advertise for bids for the work at its Jan. 25 meeting.

“We’ll probably open the bids the first of March, so we should be ready to go by mid-March, depending on the weather,” he said. “We had planned to start in November or December, but there was too much rain.

Money for the paving was included in the city’s $9.2 million capital improvements bond issue, which allocated $4.6 million, $2.3 million each for the North and South Wards, for the two-phase project.

Thompson said the full $1 million was not spent during the first phase, and the remaining money was transferred to the next round of paving, providing about $1.4 million for the second phase.

The streets scheduled for paving under the second phase include YMCA Place, Dos Casas Lane, Capri Drive, Enchanted Drive, and a section of Moomist Drive. Thompson said work will also include sections of Halls Ferry Road, a major north/south street in the city.

Warrenton Road, Cypress Centre Boulevard, Fleetwood Drive, Manship Circle, Suncrest Drive, Charleston Drive and St. Charles Place were paved during the first round of street work in 2015.

Under the paving project, sections of concrete paving will be removed, the roadbeds reworked and filled and repaved with asphalt.

Thompson said Suncoast Environmental of Florence, which has the contract to examine and assess city sewer lines, will examine the lines, adding any problems in the lines will be repaired before a street is overlaid. Storm drains and curbing will also be handled during the project.
