Animal sale brings with it plenty of smiles

Spring was in the air Saturday at Tractor Supply on South Frontage Road for the monthly small animal sale. Vendors were selling a wide range of animals including chickens, ducks, rabbits, goats and puppies.
The vendors hold two small animal sales each month and offer locally raised and hatched animals for sale.
“The first Saturday of the month we try to do River City Farm Supply and the third Saturday is here [at Tractor Supply],” organizer and vendor Cappy Martin said.
Martin owns Backyard Farms in Vicksburg where she raises chickens and rabbits for sale.
For some kids, the sale provided an opportunity to pick out an early Easter present and take home a new pet. Jordan Polk and her sister were each the proud new owner of a baby rabbit.
“We were driving yesterday and I saw the sign out there,” Polk, 9, said. “I got a bunny last year, and it sort of died. First we are going to keep it in our house and then we are going to move it down to the barn.”
The Bailess family stopped by an ended up going home with a 2-week-old male Alpine goat.
“We were going to Tractor Supply and my mom said if they have goats I am going to get one,” Chloe Bailess, 13, said. “We saw this one and we really wanted it so we got it. Going to play in the yard with him.”
Wesley Bailess, 10, added, “I like it. I wanted a goat, and it looks fun to play with.”
Other families took home egg-laying chickens and even new puppies just in time for Easter.
“The advantage of one of these versus a pet store is we raise them,” Martin said. “We can tell them how to house them, what to feed them, what they need. It is the peak time for rabbits. It is a time when people can get out in their yard and build pens because the weather is nice.”
