Langston E. ‘Sonny’ Gibson

Langston Edward “Sonny” Gibson died Monday, June 12, 2017. He was 88.

He was the son of the late Langston Edward Sr. and Katie Nelson Gibson. He was a fourth generation native and lifelong resident of Warren County.  He was a graduate of Jett High School and a retired engineer from Illinois Central Railroad after 38 years of service.

He was also a florist, earning the nickname “Rosebud,” a merchant and homebuilder.  He was an avid gardener and a member of Crossway Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Doris Reynolds, Jo Oakes and Betty Matthews.   

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Betty Gibson; a daughter, Rhonda Kammerdeiner (Ricky) of Flowood; a son, Langston “Woody” Gibson Jr. (Carmen) of Vicksburg; Granddaughters, Erin Wood and Mallory Stafford (Richard); great-grandchildren, Mollie Wood and Ivan Stafford; a sister, Helen Leggett of Vicksburg; sisters-in-law, Joyce Fields (Jim) of Vicksburg and Jynan Bowen of Cleveland; and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, June 15, at Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry White officiating. Interment will follow at Greenlawn Gardens Cemetery. 

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and 9 a.m. Thursday until the hour of service. 

Pallbearers will be James Fields, Richard Stafford, Justin Moudy, Steve Harmon, Eric Morgan and Danny Bowen. 

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. James Valentine, Jerry Lynch, Carra Sullivan and all retired railroad employees.
