HATTIESBURG — Kwadra Griggs completed 15 of 23 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns as Southern Miss routed Southern University 45-0 on Saturday.

Griggs had been battling with Keon Howard for the starting job, but had the better outing of the two in a season-opening loss to Kentucky and then was outstanding against Southern.

Griggs threw a 20-yard touchdown pass during a 28-point first quarter for Southern Miss, and added a 26-yard TD pass to Quez Watkins in the second quarter for a 35-0 halftime lead.

Southern Miss also had rushed for 197 yards as a team. T’Rod Daniels ran for 83 yards and a touchdown, and Ito Smith had 77 yards and one score.

Southern Miss also scored two defensive touchdowns. Xavier Thigpen recovering a fumble in Southern’s end zone for the first TD of the game, and Cornell Armstrong returned an interception for a score on the third play of the third quarter.

Southern (1-1) was held to 140 total yards and had three turnovers.

Darquez Lee and Glendon McDaniel were a combined 10-of-26 passing for 78 yards passing for the Jaguars.
