Plans are continuing for The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary’s 38th annual Soup and Sandwich Luncheon, Bake Sale and Silent Auction Oct. 10 at Wesley Hall at Crawford Street United Methodist Church.
This year’s luncheon is dedicated to the memory of Lucy Barwick and Beverly Ellis, auxiliary members who passed away during 2017.
A lunch of homemade beef vegetable soup, homemade pimento cheese sandwich, cookie or brownie, and beverage will be served from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased for $10 by calling 903-263-9507, 601-831-4459, or 601-415-2994.
Take-out lunches will be available. A limited number of tickets will be sold. People do not have to purchase a luncheon ticket to bid on Silent Auction items or purchase Buy It Now or Bake Sale items.
Women’s Auxiliary president Trudy James-Brown said people will be able eat at the hall.
“We’ve set it up (the hall) real nice; we would love them to come in, that way they could take advantage of the bake sale,” she said.
The Soup and Sandwich Luncheon is the auxiliary’s biggest fundraiser of the year to provide money for the organization’s programs like the Angel Tree, Book Bag program and summer camps for children.
“We couldn’t do hardly anything without that,” James-Brown said. “The others (fundraisers) are really small compared to that one. It’s our main one and we need all we can get.
“A lot of people look forward to it. They don’t look at it as buying lunch. They look at it as a donation to the Salvation Army. Some people look forward to having lunch with each other, because they haven’t seen each other in a while.”
James said the organization is still looking for donations for the luncheon’s silent auction.
The Vicksburg Chapter of The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary was organized by a group of 30 women in 1976. Since then, the organization has grown to 70 members who serve with the “Heart to God, Hand to Man” philosophy of the worldwide Salvation Army.
The purpose of the Auxiliary is to raise public awareness of The Salvation Army, furnish volunteer workers and facilitate services to the needy, assist in disaster relief, provide leadership in group work, visitation of hospital patients, and fund raising in support of The Salvation Army programs.
Over the years the auxiliary members volunteer services to the community serving children and youth as well as seniors and parents through the Mission 66 Diner, Angel Tree program, and raising money for The Salvation Army.
Judy Monroe is Chairperson of this year’s event with Pat Wines and Jacque Henley as her co-chairs. Cheryl Lloyd is bake sale chairperson.
Tina Grau and Martha Roberts are silent auction co-chairpersons, and silent auction items may be seen buy going to: http://vixsawa.weebly.com/2017-silent-auction-offerings.html, or The Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary of Vicksburg, MS Facebook page.
