LORMAN — Alcorn State didn’t do much through the air Saturday night, but its running game chewed up, spit out and left pieces of the Southern Jaguars in its teeth.
De’Lance Turner rushed for 272 yards — more than double his previous career-high of 131 set earlier this season — and two touchdowns as the Braves beat Southern 48-31 for a big Southwestern Athletic Conference victory.
Alcorn finished the game with 383 rushing yards. Quarterback Lenorris Footman had 51 yards on the ground while passing for 56.
Footman completed 6 of 15 passes, including a 17-yard touchdown to Turner in the second quarter and a 14-yard TD pass to Marquis Warford in the third quarter.
Alcorn (2-2, 1-0 SWAC) rallied from a 24-10 deficit in the second quarter by scoring 31 straight points. P.J. Simmons had two touchdown runs of 28 and 11 yards during the surge, and finished the game with 60 yards on the ground.
Turner, meanwhile, scored on a 52-yard run on the fourth play of the second half and added a 49-yard touchdown run with 1:56 left in the game to make it 48-31 and finally ice the victory. Turner had 21 carries in the game.
Southern quarterback Austin Howard was 24-of-45 passing for 274 yards and two touchdowns, while Devon Benn ran for 134 yards and a TD.
