Letter to the editor: Reader agrees about attack on Robert E. Lee

To the editor:

The letter by Mr. Campbell (Ann attack on Lee is an attack on Christianity, Sept. 3) about Robert E. Lee was a very good description of the kind of man he was. Lee was one of the greatest men this country ever produced. I would like to add one little known fact about Lee. Abraham Lincoln offered the position as supreme commander of all the forces of the North. Mr. Lee, after several days of consideration, refused the offer. The President then gave the position to Irwin McDowell.

Another thing liberals don’t like to talk about is there were more blacks that owned slaves than most would believe. One has a book about him. The title of the book is “The Natchez Barber.” He was a “freeman.”

A freeman was a slave that had been given his freedom by his owner for whatever reason. He would be given papers and he could do anything anyone else could but vote. The man wa a barber.

He saved his money and bought land for ten cents an acre. Ten dollars would buy a hundred acres.

At his death, he owned a goodly number of people. Maybe one of the leftist reporters would like to look that up. Might be a real surprise.
