Tallulah Academy had the perfect ending for a nearly perfect season.

The Lady Trojans scored two runs on an error in the top of the seventh inning Saturday, and beat Humphreys Academy 4-2 to win the MAIS Class A fast-pitch softball championship.

Tallulah Academy swept the best-of-three championship series to win its first softball state title, and finished the season with a 17-1 record. Its only loss was in the double-elimination state tournament last weekend.
Humphreys Academy was going for its third consecutive Class A championship.

Tallulah won 6-2 in Game 1 of the series on Wednesday, but Game 2 was much more of a battle. Tallulah scored twice in the top of the first inning on a two-run single by Logan Kidrick, but Humphreys answered with runs in the fourth and sixth innings to tie it at 2.

With two outs and a runner on in the top of the seventh, Faith Kivett was hit by a pitch and Cydney Westmoreland reached on a bunt single to load the bases. Jessi Williams followed with a grounder to third that resulted in an error, allowing Kivett and Summer Fortenberry to score and give Tallulah a 4-2 lead.
Kivett was only 1-for-2 in the game, but scored two of Tallulah’s four runs.

Westmoreland, Tallulah’s pitcher, allowed two runs on seven hits in seven innings. She struck out two and walked none. Westmoreland did not walk a batter in her last four games this season.

Humphreys threatened to tie or win in the bottom of the seventh and force a winner-take-all Game 3, but Tallulah was able to get out of a jam. With two on and one out, Humphreys had a runner picked off at second. Tallulah third baseman Kidrick, the third baseman, then cleanly fielded a grounder and threw to first to give the Lady Trojans the victory and the state title.
