Dogs big and small came to Petsense Saturday morning dressed to the nines for Paws Rescue’s Strut Your Mutt costume contest.
Eight dogs competed in the contest dressed as a witch, Batman, old lady and even a dachshund dressed as a hotdog.
The winner of a goodie basket donated by Petsense was Gypsy, owned by Christy Jeffers, who came dressed as a pink cowgirl complete with a pink hat and painted nails.
“We are having a Halloween pet contest,” Paws Rescue president Leigh Conerly said. “Something for people to do with their pets and have a good time and also to try and raise money for the rescues in our care.”
Contestants had to pay a $5 entry fee and were judged by a Paws Rescue volunteer.
McMillan Crevitt attended Strut Your Mutt with her dog Lilly Jewel who was dressed as an old lady complete with a granny sweater and grey wig.
“She just acts like an old lady,” Crevitt said of the costume choice. “She stays at my barbershop while I work all day long. Whenever she’s sitting there, she has to be all wrapped up, bundled up in a blanket like a little old lady because she is so cold. It just fits her.”
The pet owners were treated to a variety of snacks and then the contestants paraded through the store before a judge chose Gypsy as the overall winner.
“I came because I talked to Leigh about getting a cat because I lost mine and it broke my heart,” Ginger Kelly, who attended with her dog Izzy dressed as a hotdog, said. “We were talking and she was so friendly and so nice and she told me about this and I thought it would be something nice to go to. I loved it. I will be here next year for sure.”
