The suspect in the Sunday morning shooting that left one man dead will be held without bond in the Warren County Jail.
Rico DeMichael Hay, 31, 6609 Mississippi 27 North, Utica, was denied bond by Municipal Court Judge Toni Terrett during his initial appearance Monday and will be held in the Warren County Jail pending the next grand jury session.
Hay is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Corey Maxie Jr., 22, of Edwards.
Vicksburg Police officers responded to reports of a physical disturbance on the 1200 block of Fayette Street Sunday morning around 12:36 a.m., Sgt. Johnnie Edwards said.
When officers arrived on scene, they found Maxie lying in the street with “what appeared to be a single gunshot wound to the head,” Edwards said.
“Questioning the witnesses on scene, we learned that the assailant, who was later identified as Rico DeMichael Hay of Utica, had left the scene walking,” Edwards said. “Less than five hours later we had Mr. Hay in custody.”
Hay was taken into custody at his home in Utica around 5:41 a.m. and then held in the Issaquena County Correctional Facility until his initial appearance Monday morning.
Edwards said the case is still under investigation.
“Police investigators are still working to figure out what led up to this shooting,” Edwards said. “We are still trying to find out what caused this senseless murder. It appeared talking to witnesses that there was a verbal disturbance, later which led to the shooting. We are still trying to gather information.”
Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey declared Maxie dead at the scene.
