The city of Vicksburg has been named the 16th safest city in Mississippi, according to a survey conducted by the home security website, SafeHome.org,

According to information from the company, the ranking is based on a study of different data, using current data from the FBI’s uniform crime reports showing how many and what types of crimes occurred and crime trends, and other information like law enforcement officer ratio, demographics, population density, unemployment rate, income and education levels to develop the ranking.

The survey indicated the city recorded 109 violent crimes, or a 32.6 percent decrease from previous years, and 1,329 property crimes, or a 12 percent decrease. It showed the citizen-to-officer ratio, based on a population of 23,275 people, is one officer for very 276 residents.

“That’s better than it was before,” Mayor George Flaggs Jr. said, adding one survey last year ranked Vicksburg as one of the top five dangerous cities in the state.

“That’s good to know, and especially good to know because we pride ourselves on our tourism and one of 21 certified retirement communities (in the state).

“We just need to continue doing what we’re doing. We have domestic crimes down (but) we can do more with community-type policing. I’m still not satisfied with property crimes.

“We’re headed in the right direction; we just need to keep going until we have zero tolerance with crime.
