Registration for Malcolm Butler Football Camp begins Sunday

Malcolm Butler’s address changed this offseason, but his commitment to his hometown remains the same.

Butler, who signed with the Tennessee Titans as a free agent in March, will once again host the Malcolm Butler Football Camp July 14 at his alma mater Vicksburg High School.

Online registration for the camp begins Sunday at malcolmbutlerfootballcamp.org. The camp is free, but space is limited to about 500 children — approximately 200 in the Malcolm & Me Camp for first- through sixth-graders, and 300 in the Malcolm Butler Junior High and High School Camp for seventh- through 12th-graders.

Both camps will feature instruction from Butler and college and pro players, and are non-contact.

Registration is available only through the camp’s web site. It will continue until April 30 or all slots are filled, whichever comes first.

“We expect about the same turnout as last year,” said camp committee member Carolynn Bingham. “We keep it to around 500 so it’s a workable camp and Malcolm can spend time with people. If you get too many more than that, it’s more like a field day with people running around.”

Bingham encouraged parents of young children to register for the Malcolm & Me camp early. She said the camp for older players typically takes a bit longer to fill all the slots, but the slots for the younger camp go quickly.

“With 200 slots for the first- through sixth-graders, it’s going to be really important for parents to get on that as soon as it opens,” she said. “Usually what happens is the parents register the younger kids and they do it pretty quickly. Then the older kids are usually left to do it themselves, and it might take them a few days to get around to it.”

This is the fourth edition of the camp. Butler started it after his rookie season with the New England Patriots, when he made the game-saving interception in the final minute of the team’s Super Bowl XLIX win over the Seattle Seahawks.

The camp was initially limited to 200 children, but was split into two last year to allow both more interaction between Butler and other instructors and more children the opportunity to participate.

Bingham said the camp has grown not only in the number of participants, but also the area they come from.

“We’ve had kids come from Louisiana, Natchez, Jackson … anywhere that’s close to Vicksburg,” Bingham said. “Of course we want our local kids to come too, but it is first come, first served.”
