JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi man has died after a shootout with police.
Jackson police spokesman Sgt. Roderick Holmes says 30-year-old Elliot Reed died Wednesday after an encounter with police at a south Jackson gas station.
Holmes says Elliot and Chauncy Reed and the unnamed officer traded shots around 1 a.m. Elliot Reed was critically wounded and died hours later at a hospital. Chauncy Reed was arrested and is charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and capital murder. It’s unclear to what crime the capital murder charges refer.
The officer was not injured.
Holmes says officials are reviewing video from gas station cameras.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is leading the inquiry. Spokesman Warren Strain says the investigation is ongoing and declined further comment.
