It was nothing short of domination for the Vicksburg Swim Association on Sunday, as a huge performance on Sunday gave them a lopsided victory at the Stamm Family Invitational meet. The final scores had VSA at 1,789 points, with Mississippi Makos Swim Team coming in second place with 709 points and Casc Racers coming in third with 506 points.

The VSA men paced their events with 869 points compared to Mississippi Makos’ 523, but the difference could really be seen in the women’s teams, where Vicksburg scored 920 points to Mississippi Makos’ 177.

“It feels good to get the overall win, this is only the second time year we’ve ever won the meet, last year was our first year to win,” VSA coach Mathew Mixon said. “The last couple of meets we’ve been to, we had an unofficial win, and then a second place and then now another first place, so it feels good carrying that momentum into the summer, and it’s a boost for the kids. It shows the program has come a long way, it’s good to see that.”

Three VSA competitors finished with the most points for their age group, with Grace Woolsey leading the girls aged 9-10, Andrew Fields leading the 15-and-over boys and Jordan Wright leading the 15-and-over girls.

“Those swimmers who wrack up in their individual age groups really help with the team effort,” Mixon said.

Mixon wasn’t surprised by their stellar performances after seeing how hard they’d worked in preparation.

“It’s really good, because those are some dedicated swimmers. All three of them come to practice 90 percent of the time, and we practice seven or eight times a week,” Mixon said. “It’s always good to see the swimmers who put in the work get the reward, because that’s what we’re trying to teach these kids, is that you have to work and you have to have a goal, and usually the reward will come later.”

VSA captured first in a staggering 20 events on the day. Woolsey won four, Fields and Wright both won two and Adrienne Eckstein and Connor Clark each won two. Olivia Busby  Leah Larson, Bree Butler all won an event as well.

The relay team of Katelyn Clark, Alana Jackson, Woolsey and Kara Rowe won the girls’ 12-and-under 200 meter medley relay, while Eckstein, Emily Cook, Larson and Abi Wallace won the girls’ 200 meter medley relay.

A team of Tommy Mrtin, Nate Crimbley, Clark and Fields won the boys’ 200 meter medley relay.

Mixon felt his team’s outstanding performance would continue to pay dividends in the future.

“They’ll get a little boost, and that’s good, that’s kind of what we needed to help us train hard for the rest of the season,” Mixon said.
