Letter: New sports complex has bad access

To the editor:

This week we had the mayor break ground for the much advertised and long overdue sport complex.

It will be a great addition to what Vicksburg has to offer, if it runs well and utilized judiciously. One basic issue has been overlooked, which is the access to the park.

We had heard of a proposed U.S. 61 south connector but do not see any progress on that. We are expecting the overloaded Halls Ferry connector to provide ingress to this high traffic generator.

Halls Ferry is a 30 foot, single-lane undivided carriageway with residential access at every 100 feet for almost half a mile. Besides this, we have a national level institute namely ERDC situated on this road.

Halls Ferry also is the major north-south artery for communities south of Vicksburg for miles and also absorbs Fisher Ferry road traffic. I am surprised how the traffic studies justified this project without pre-expansion of Halls Ferry Road.

We are looking at a potential traffic jam situation and high accident prone zone in near future if nothing is done to properly assess the traffic volume and take corrective measure immediately.
