WACO, Texas — A team from Mississippi had not appeared in the Little League Southwest Regional since 2004. And, the two times the state was represented, in 2003 and 2004, the teams failed to earn a win.
Both the streak of not being represented and not earning a win, ended in grand fashion Wednesday as the Mississippi team, made up of girls from the Vicksburg Girls Softball Association, blanked the team from Fruita, Colorado, 10-0.
Mississippi starting pitcher Abby Morgan was dominant, striking out 11 and allowing just two hits in the shutout win.
The offense backed up Morgan’s effort, scoring 10 runs in seven hits, taking advantage of nine Colorado errors.
Kayleigh Karel scored the first run of the game for Mississippi in the first inning. Karel reached first on an error and then stole second. In her attempt to steal third, Colorado misplayed the ball, which allowed Karel to score.
The score remained 1-0 until the Mississippi offense collected six runs in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth. After holding the Colorado offense scoreless in the bottom of the fifth inning, the game was called due to the run-rule.
Mississippi first baseman Mary Evelyn Hossley led the team with two hits and two RBIs. She also scored a run.
Third baseman Jill Smith reached base three times, each on walks, to lead the team, and scored two runs.
With the win, Mississippi moves on to play Texas East Thursday at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on the ESPN+ app.
The team representing Texas East last year won the Southwest Regional Tournament and then went on to win the World Series.
