Wayne Lee Mangum

Wayne Lee Mangum, 81, of Vicksburg, and formerly of Memphis, Tennessee, passed away on Monday, April 16, 2018, in Vicksburg.

He was born in Magee, on Dec. 9, 1936, to Wayne Sutton Mangum and Ruby Davis Mangum. He graduated from Mendenhall High School and attended Mississippi State University, where he played football on scholarship. He also attained a masters degree from Memphis State University.

Wayne was married to Paula Keith Scott on Aug. 10, 1958, in Covington, Tennessee.

Following graduation from college, Wayne served in the U. S. Army as a member of the 82nd and 101st Airborne, achieving the rank of captain and receiving an honorable discharge. Employed by Memphis City Schools from 1965 until 1998, he taught science at Longview Junior High and Kingsbury High School, coaching football at both. He later served as assistant principal and principal at Lanier Junior High and principal at Wooddale Junior High.

An enthusiastic Mississippi State alumnus, he was a member of the M Club and was a regular attendee during football season. He was also an avid supporter of the Mississippi State Famous Maroon Band.

Survivors include sister, Ruby Mangum Hooks; son, Wayne Lee Mangum, Jr.; daughter, Melody M. Gibson; daughter, Melynn M. Arendale and son-in-law, Alan T. Arendale; granddaughter, Ivey G. Hardison and husband, Cam Hardison; granddaughter, Aubrey Arendale; grandsons, Garrett Gibson and Avery Arendale and great-grandson, James Hardison.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife of 52 years, sister Lynda Mangum Cockrell, son-in-law William Lee Gibson and son-in-law James Travis Blackwell.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2018, at Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home, 1830 Cherry Street, Vicksburg, MS, 39180. The family will receive visitors beginning at 1:30 p.m. There will be a gathering of family and friends at 1 Lakewood Lane in Vicksburg immediately following the service. Interment of ashes will take place at a graveside service at Covington Memorial Gardens in Covington, Tennessee, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5.
