Old Bridge still attractive

The historic Old Mississippi River Bridge continues to be a big draw for locals and visitors. That was certainly evident the last few days.

The bridge was packed Thursday night for the first-ever “Supper on the ‘Sip” event that kicked off the United Way of West Central Mississippi’s campaign. Local restaurants set up along the bridge with delicious food that a huge crowd enjoyed, as well as the amazing view from the old bridge. By all indications, the inaugural event was an incredible success and plans are already being made for next year’s event.

Saturday, the annual “Bricks and Spokes” was held for the ninth time with more than 200 cyclists participating in an event that includes riding across the Old Mississippi River bridge into Louisiana and back across the river into Mississippi and through the Vicksburg National Military Park. Riders of all ages and skills enjoyed the day that features five different course lengths.

From all indications, the race once again was a huge success with riders especially enjoying the chance to ride across the Old Bridge.

Two more bridge events will be coming up this fall with “Over the River Run” scheduled for Oct. 13 and “Bras Across the Bridge,” a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness to conclude Nov. 3.

The historic bridge continues to make an impact for locals and drawing others into our community. But wouldn’t it be great if the old bridge were open year-round for bicyclists and pedestrians?
