River Oaks shuts out Porter’s Chapel

MONROE, La. — Porter’s Chapel Academy’s offense didn’t have any three-and-outs Friday night against River Oaks.

It didn’t score any points, either.

The Eagles were derailed after a promising opening drive netted no points, and wound up losing 35-0 to River Oaks for their fourth consecutive loss. The latest defeat likely ended any slim remaining chance PCA (1-6) had at making the playoffs, as well as its hopes of a second straight .500 season.

PCA will host District 3-AAA leader Central Hinds next week, and coach Blake Purvis said the goal now is to treat each week as a one-game season.

“We’ve still got to take it one week at a time. Move forward and keep grinding. That’s it. That’s the bottom line,” Purvis said.

PCA’s first drive Friday advanced deep into River Oaks territory. The Eagles converted two fourth downs, but wound up turning it over on an interception in the end zone. River Oaks answered with a long run and a touchdown, and things went sideways from there.

PCA didn’t punt — it elected to go for it on some fourth downs later in the game — but never quite got going again, either.

“We had some penalties that put us behind the chains, and things like that,” Purvis said. “I was extremely proud of our guys’ effort. I thought we cut back on our mistakes. River Oaks just methodically took the ball down the field and wore us down.”
