BROOKHAVEN — Two Brookhaven police officers were killed in an exchange of gunfire with a suspect on North Sixth Street early Saturday morning.

More than 30 police vehicles are still crammed into the dense residential area at the triple intersection of Sixth, Hinds and Choctaw streets, and the shooting remains under investigation as of 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Brookhaven police, Lincoln County deputies and highway patrolmen are searching the area and interviewing possible witnesses.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will take charge of the developing case and has a crime unit on scene.

Two unidentified males were handcuffed and led away, though police are not giving out any details at this time.
