BIRMINGHAM — Nick Fitzgerald broke a coveted Southeastern Conference record on Saturday, and earned a bonus on Monday by taking home the league’s Offensive Player of the Week Award.

Fitzgerald, the Bulldogs’ senior quarterback, won the award for the fifth time in his career, which tied Dak Prescott for most in school history.

Fitzgerald accounted for 264 yards of total offense and two touchdowns in Saturday’s 23-9 win over then-No. 8 Auburn. He rushed for 195 yards, and in the process broke the SEC’s career record for rushing yards by a quarterback. The record was previously held by Florida’s Tim Tebow.

Fitzgerald now sits at 2,999 rushing yards and 40 rushing touchdowns for his career.

Another Bulldog, defensive lineman Montez Sweat, also earned an SEC award as he was named the Defensive Lineman of the Week. It’s the fifth time Sweat has won the award in his career, which ties a league record.
Sweat had three sacks, forced one fumble and added two quarterback hurries that forced incompletions. He became the first Bulldog with three or more sacks in a game since 2005, and the first to do it in a conference game since Ed Smith versus Arkansas in, 1998.
