As part of National Farmer’s Day, Redwood Elementary and Bovina Elementary schools celebrated the Farm to School initiative Friday with representatives from the state department of agriculture and commerce, as well as the Mississippi Department of Education’s Department of Child Nutrition.
According to Vicksburg Warren School District communications director Christi Kilroy, students learned about several types of farming, tried new foods, heard from celebrity chef Nick Wallace, as well as Mississippi Agriculture Commissioner Andy Gipson and school board member Jim Stirgus.
Local agriculture-related businesses also participated, sharing farm equipment and farm animals with students.
Dual enrollment students from Warren Central and Vicksburg high schools culinary program were also on hand to provide farm fresh dishes.
