Another Friday, another shootout for the Vicksburg Gators.

Markell Young rushed for five touchdowns — four of them in the second half — as Ridgeland scored 26 unanswered points to beat Vicksburg 54-30 on Friday.

It was the third time in four games that the Gators (2-5, 1-3 Region 2-5A) have given up 50 points or more. They’ve scored 30 or more in four consecutive games.

Young’s big night overshadowed another outstanding performance by Vicksburg’s Cedric Phillips. The junior wide receiver ran for two touchdowns, including an 86-yarder in the second quarter, and returned a kickoff for a touchdown. That came after he scored twice and had 154 total yards last week against Cleveland Central.

The Gators and Titans (5-3, 2-2) combined for 58 points in the last 13 ½ minutes of the first half Friday. Phillips had all three of his touchdowns in that span, and Tyrese Wolfe caught a 41-yard TD pass from Levi Wyatt as the Gators went into halftime with a 30-28 lead.

It didn’t last, though.

Young scored his second touchdown of the game on the opening drive of the second half, and after a Vicksburg fumble punched another one in a minute later to put Ridgeland ahead 41-30. He added two more touchdowns on runs of 3 and 48 yards in the fourth quarter to ice the game.
