Assistant 9th Circuit District attorney Angela Carpenter has been nominated to replace Toni Terrett as Vicksburg municipal judge, Mayor George Flaggs Jr. said.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen are expected to approve Carpenter’s appointment to the city bench Monday. Aldermen Michael Mayfield and Alex Monsour said they support the appointment.
Terrett was elected Nov. 6 to the 9th Circuit District Court, replacing Judge Isadore Patrick, who is retiring. Carpenter finished second in the election. Terrett’s resignation becomes effective Dec. 25.
Flaggs said Carpenter’s experience as a prosecutor was one of the reasons he nominated her to replace Terrett.
“It will be very helpful,” he said, citing her experience dealing with the felony cases in Circuit Court, adding he hopes she will be able to help reduce the number of cases coming before the court, “And at the same time be firm on her judicial decisions and (let offenders) know we are serious about crime in the city of Vicksburg.”
He said Carpenter has talked with the board, Police Chief Milton Moore, city prosecutor Julie Decker and city attorney Nancy Thomas.
“Everybody was excited about it because of her experience, and she comes highly recommended,” Flaggs said.
“Ms. Carpenter’s extensive prosecutorial experience makes her an ideal fit for this position. I appreciate her commitment to public safety in Vicksburg and fully expect she will serve our citizens with honesty and integrity.”
Carpenter received her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with an emphasis in juvenile justice from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1992.
She received a master’s degree in political science from Mississippi College in 1994 and her law degree from Mississippi College in 2000.
She has served as senior assistant district attorney for the 9th District in Vicksburg and Warren County since 2008. She was in private practice specializing in criminal defense before joining the District Attorney’s Office.
