Mayor George Flaggs Jr. will swear in Angela Carpenter as Vicksburg Municipal Court judge in a 1 p.m. ceremony Monday at the court, 820 Veto St.
Carpenter was selected to replace Municipal Judge Toni Terrett, who is resigning the post after her election Nov. 6 to the 9th Circuit District Court, replacing Judge Isadore Patrick, who is retiring. Carpenter finished second in the election. Terrett’s resignation becomes effective Dec. 25. She will be sworn in as circuit judge Dec. 27.
Flaggs said one of the reasons Carpenter, an assistant 9th Circuit district attorney, was selected was because of her experience as a prosecutor.
“It will be very helpful,” he said when he announced her nomination, citing her experience dealing with the felony cases in Circuit Court. He added he hoped Carpenter will be able to help reduce the number of cases coming before the court, “And at the same time be firm on her judicial decisions and (let offenders) know we are serious about crime in the city of Vicksburg.”
Carpenter received her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice with an emphasis in juvenile justice from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1992.
She received a master’s degree in political science from Mississippi College in 1994 and her law degree from Mississippi College in 2000.
She has served as senior assistant district attorney for the 9th District in Vicksburg and Warren County since 2008. She was in private practice specializing in criminal defense before joining the District Attorney’s Office.
