Registration, camps coming up for VGSA

In an effort to meet the growing demand of youth softball, and provide an opportunity for players to get more time on the practice field, the Vicksburg Girls Softball Association has organized two day camps for players in the 6U to 16U age groups.

The camps, scheduled for Jan. 19 and Feb. 2, will provide instruction in nearly all facets of the game including baserunning, hitting, fielding and throwing. Lunch will also be provided.

“The number one goal for these camps is to have fun,” VGSA president Mike Foley said. “After that, we want to give these girls some instruction they can use and carry over into the upcoming VGSA season.”

Those interested in having their child attend one, or both, of the camps can email the player’s name, age and contact information to vicksburggsa@gmail.com. Registration is $10 and will open at 8:30 a.m. the day of the camp.
The camps begin at 9 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m.

As for the upcoming season for the VGSA, registration opens Jan. 7. Registration forms will be sent home through area schools and will also be available at 601 Sports. The registration fee is $60 per player, or $50 for families with more than two players. The league will include five age divisions for players ages 4-16.

There will be a coaches and umpires meeting on Feb. 18. Practices begin on Feb. 23 and the season on March 23.

“The VGSA remains the largest youth recreation softball league in the state, and this is just part of our efforts to meet that demand with more programs and opportunities,” Foley said. “The focus on player development goes hand-in-hand with the move last year to affiliate our organization with Little League.”
