Eighth-graders from the Vicksburg Warren School District’s two junior high schools will get help choosing a career path Wednesday and Thursday when the district’s three career academies host a showcase at the Vicksburg Convention Center, 1600 Mulberry St.
“This is the second time we’ve done the academy showcase,” said Christi Kilroy, school district public information officer. “Vicksburg High School, Warren Central High School and the River City Early College come together and put up displays for each of the three academies at each school.
“River City Early College is our accelerated learning academy where they (students) get to have the opportunity to earn an associate’s degree while at the same time they’re getting a high school diploma.”
She said eighth-graders from Vicksburg Junior and Warren Central Junior High schools and the Academy of Innovation will go with their classes to the convention center during the two-day program.
“They will get a chance to go around and learn about each of the academies at the high schools and River City Early College, because they will have to make a decision this spring about which academy they want to be in or if they want to apply to River City Early College,” she said.
The showcase will be open to the public Wednesday from 3 to 6 p.m., so parents can help their students make their decision, and for parents of fifth-grade students to get information about the academies.
Kilroy said school officials are hoping parents will visit the public showcase Wednesday.
“We think it’s so important that people understand,” she said. “We have a lot of folks from our steering committee and the business community who will be there to answer questions about how to get in involved with the schools.”
