The Porter’s Chapel Academy Lady Eagles turned a bad first quarter into a pretty good day.

“It was pretty good. We ran a lot of different things that I wanted to work on and get prepared for our district games, especially on blocking out, so overall I think we did a pretty good job,” PCA coach Cookie Johnson said.

Neither team was able to muster much offense for the first quarter and a half as everything from layups to 3-pointers was badly off the mark. Finally, Martin drilled a 3-pointer and Anna Grace White followed up with a jumper to key a 7-0 spurt and PCA was off and running.

PCA outscored Rebul 18-1 over the last five minutes of the second quarter to take a commanding 27-8 lead into halftime. Martin scored nine points and White had all five of her points in the period.

“I told them we just need to play our game. I think they were everywhere, and I told them to just get it together and do what we do best,” Johnson said. “The first quarter wasn’t good at all. Once we got on a roll, everything started falling.”

Rebul didn’t make a field goal for more than nine minutes, until Jasmine Bridgers ended the drought with about three minutes left in the third quarter. The Lady Raiders only made two field goals in the entire second half.

By the time Bridgers scored her basket, PCA led 33-10. It was 39-11 heading into the fourth quarter, and the rest of the game was played with a running clock.

All in all, it was a solid win for the Lady Eagles as they took a quick break from their district schedule to win their fourth game in a row. They’ll host Hillcrest Tuesday at 6 p.m. in another District 3-AAA game.

(B) PCA 54, Rebul 39
Luke Yocum hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 of his game-high 16 points in the first quarter as Porter’s Chapel rolled past Rebul Academy in the Red Carpet Basketball Classic.

PCA earned its first win of 2019 and snapped a five-game losing streak.

Yocum hit a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter when PCA (6-13) outscored Rebul 23-7. The Eagles led by as many as 30 points in the second half and the outcome was never in doubt down the stretch.

Leon Simms scored 15 points for PCA and Jake Arias added 10. Nash Durr led Rebul with 13 points and Michael Sloyan scored 12.
