A Vicksburg man is being held in the Warren County Jail in lieu of $175,000 bond charged with aggravated assault-domestic violence for reportedly shooting his estranged wife in the face Monday night.
Vicksburg police Lt. Johnnie Edwards said Milton Ray Jefferson, 61, 319 Hutson St., is accused of shooting his 31-year-old estranged wife after she refused to talk to him. The reported shooting occurred in the area of Coccaros Aly and Halls Ferry Road about 9:20 p.m. Monday. The couple had been separated about one month.
The woman was taken to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where she was listed in stable condition.
Jefferson’s bond was set by Municipal Judge Angela Carpenter at an initial appearance Tuesday. He did not have a lawyer and asked to court to appoint one.
According to police reports, the woman was shopping in the F&S Foodmart, 2607 Halls Ferry Road, when Jefferson apparently saw her and went inside to talk with her. She refused to talk with him, and left the store with Jefferson following her. Somewhere between the store and Coccaros Aly, he shot her.
Jefferson turned himself in at the Vicksburg Police Department about 10:02 p.m., and gave officers a .380-caliberh handgun believed used in the shooting.
