Gators rout Germantown, run winning streak to five

There’s still a week and a couple of games before they get there, but the Vicksburg Gators are playing some of their best basketball of the year as they streak toward the postseason.

Ty’Ron Moore hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 of his game-high 14 points in the third quarter as the Gators rushed past region rival Germantown 82-44 on Friday. It was Vicksburg’s fifth win in a row, with four of those coming by double digits.

The Gators (15-8, 5-1 Region 4-5A) will finish the regular season with road games at Clinton on Tuesday and Brookhaven on Friday. The Region 4-5A tournament is next week at Ridgeland High School, and the Gators might be a favorite with how they’re playing at the moment.

Vicksburg hit seven of its nine 3-pointers in the second half. Darius Johnson scored eight of his 12 points in the second quarter to help the Gators take control. Greg Jenkins finished with eight points and Devan Kiner and George Gaskin scored seven apiece.

The Vicksburg Missy Gators finished a difficult, flu-ridden week with a lopsided loss to Germantown (20-3, 5-0 Region 4-5A).

Madison Booker scored 15 points, and Marvia Spann netted all 11 of her points in the second half as the Lady Mavericks bookended the game with strong efforts to pull away. Germantown led 18-8 at the end of the first quarter, then closed things out by outscoring VHS 20-9 in the fourth.

Sha’Kora Knight led Vicksburg (16-9, 3-3) with 11 points and Destini Sims scored eight. The Missy Gators lost their third game in a row, at the end of a week in which a number of players missed time because of a flu bug that rippled through the school.

(B) Greenville 55, Warren Central 50
Danny Washington went 9-for-13 from the field and finished with 20 points to lead Greenville (14-13, 1-5 Region 4-6A) past Warren Central (13-12, 3-3) on Friday.

Jabari Bowman scored 19 points and Jalen Glass 15 for Warren Central, which lost its third region game in a row — all on the road — after a 3-0 start in league play. It will be the No. 3 seed in the Region 4-6A tournament next week at Clinton, and will play Provine in the first round.

(G) Greenville 74, Warren Central 43
Jeanee Anderson made eight 3-pointers to finish with 29 points and five assists, and Charkaju Warren had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds as undefeated Greenville (26-0, 6-0 Region 4-6A) took down the Warren Central Lady Vikes (9-14, 2-4).

Mary Starnes also had a double-double for Greenville, with 11 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.

Aniya Sanders led Warren Central with 29 points and Zykerri Segrest scored 10.
Warren Central plays at Northwest Rankin Tuesday at 6 p.m., and then returns home to face Terry for senior night on Friday.

(G) Riverfield 51, Porter’s Chapel 38
Taylor Hixon scored 24 points to lead Riverfield Academy past Porter’s Chapel Academy (13-12) in the regular-season finale for both teams on Thursday.

PCA got a great game from Anna Grace White, who totaled 10 points, 10 rebounds and five steals, but couldn’t overcome a 13-for-35 (37 percent) shooting effort from the field and a 10-for-25 performance at the free throw line. The Lady Eagles also committed 19 turnovers.

Brittnee Martin had 15 points and six rebounds for PCA, and Fayth McDaniel scored eight points.

Riverfield and PCA will play each other again in the first round of the MAIS District 3-AAA tournament, Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Central Hinds Academy in Raymond.

Taylor Chewning led St. Al with six points and Anna Gatlin scored four. The Lady Flashes will face Park Place Christian in the first round of the District 3-AAA tournament Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Central Hinds has a first-round bye in the tournament and will play the St. Al-Park Place winner Thursday at 4 p.m.

(B) St. Aloysius 79, Central Hinds 54
Sean Simpson led a balanced effort with 12 points, and Markeese Wilson scored nine of his 11 points in the first half as the St. Aloysius Flashes sprinted past Central Hinds.

Fourteen of the 16 players on St. Al’s roster scored. Thomas Trichell was also in double figures with 10 points.

Ross Mitchell led Central Hinds with 21 points — 16 in the second half — and Aaron Richburg scored 12.

St. Al is the No. 3 seed in the boys’ District 3-AAA tournament and will face Porter’s Chapel Academy in an elimination game Tuesday at 5:15 p.m. at Central Hinds. The winner advances to face Riverfield Academy on Thursday and also earns a berth in the MAIS Class AAA South State tournament.

Central Hinds will play Park Place Tuesday at 7:45 p.m.
