Warren Central got a little wake-up call in the third inning of Tuesday’s game against Terry. By the fifth inning, it was putting its opponent to bed.
The Lady Vikes scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning and 12 more in the fourth to rush past Terry for a 19-5 victory at Lucy Young Field in its 2019 home opener. The outburst came after Terry scored three runs in the top of the third to take a 4-1 lead.
Kelsey Lockridge started the 12-run inning with an RBI single and capped it with a three-run home run. She finished the game 2-for-2 with two walks and four RBIs.
Annalyn Nevels and Kayleigh Beard both went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Lady Vikes. Kallie Page singled, walked, drove in two runs and scored two more.
Terry’s pitchers issued 14 walks — 11 of them by starter Jordan Funchess — and the Bulldogs committed six errors.
Warren Central starter Brianna Daughtry allowed four runs in 2 2/3 innings, but reliever Mary Evelyn Hossley picked up the slack. Hossley allowed one unearned run in the last 2 1/3 innings, no hits and two walks, and struck out three.
Warren Central (2-2) will play at Germantown Thursday at 6:15 p.m., and then in the Vicksburg High Tournament Saturday at VHS’ Softball Swamp field. Warren Central will play Vicksburg at 11 a.m. and Riverside at 12:45.
Vicksburg will play Riverside at 2:30 p.m. in the last game of the tournament.
The tournament is also a fundraiser for the National Fast Pitch Coaches Association’s Strikeout Cancer program. Monetary donations will be accepted throughout the day to benefit the charity.
