A party celebrating the 90th birthday of Elizabeth Sanders, the first African American woman to own and operate an accredited cosmetology school in Vicksburg, was held Feb. 23 at Duff Green Mansion.

Mayor George Flaggs Jr., honored her with a plaque from the city of Vicksburg recognizing her for her “unwavering dedication, service and commitment as a community activist, entrepreneur and loving parent. As a vital member of the community, we salute you on your 90th birthday. May God continue to bless you for many years to come.”

Sanders worked as a cosmetologist for 57 years and instructor of Mildays School of Cosmetology from 1983-94.
