Fifteen streets in the North Ward, streets in Cedar Hill Cemetery, and Pemberton Boulevard in the South Ward are included in a city paving project totaling almost $2 million.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen Monday accepted a bid of $1.95 million from APAC-Mississippi of Jackson to do the work, which includes paving Pemberton Square Boulevard from its intersection with Halls Ferry Road to U.S. 61, public works director Garnet Van Norman said.
“We decided to bid all the projects as one,” he said. “We save money that way and can get more streets paved.”
Previously, he said, paving projects in the North and South wards were bid separately.
“That cost us more money,” he said, adding Pemberton Square Boulevard is the only South Ward street to be paved. The city at one time included paving the parking lot at Riverfront Park, but later withdrew the plan after the Warren County Board of Supervisors raised concerns about the cost.
The county and city jointly maintain the park.
Van Norman said only sections of some of the streets in the North Ward will be paved under the project, and all of the streets will be “milled” to remove the old surface. None of the cemetery streets, he said, will be milled.
He said some subsurface work will be done on Pemberton Square Boulevard, which has had a history of problems.
“This is a good time to begin paving,” he said, “paving season is just about to start.”
The streets scheduled for paving in the North Ward include:
• Irene Street;
• Scenic Drive;
• Maxwell Street;
• Hugo Street;
• Hildegard Terrace;
• Pearl Street;
• Ford Road;
• Baldwin Ferry Road from Hope Street to the railroad bridge;
• Beresford Street;
• Baldwin Ferry from Court Street to the railroad bridge;
• First North Street from Clay Street to Main Street;
• Adams Street;
• Fayette Street;
• North Poplar Street;
• Jefferson Street;
• Mississippi Street, Alabama Street, N Section and J Section in Cedar Hill Cemetery.
