Raise the Roof March 30

The Southern Cultural Heritage Foundation will present the 4th Annual Raise the Roof Talent Search & Competition. Registration is open now. And the deadline to register is March 15. Entry fees are $20 for individuals and $50 for groups (3 or more). To register go to www.southernculture.org or call the SCHF Business Office at 601-631-2997.

Contestants will compete for the chance to win cash money totaling $550. The Overall Cash Grand Prize Winner will receive $250.

The competition will be held in the SCHF Auditorium Saturday, March 30, at 4 p.m.

Tickets to the show are $10 for adults, $5 for youth (ages 6-18). Admission for children 5 and under is free. 

Proceeds from Raise the Roof will go towards the preservation of the SCHC Complex. 

Sushi Workshop March 25

Enjoy an authentic Japanese edible art form that is both healthy and delicious.  Learn just how fun, fast and easy rolling sushi can be as William Furlong teaches you the proper techniques. 

Furlong was taught the Asian style of cooking from Sous Chef Huy Tran as he served as executive chef at 208 South Lamar in Oxford.

‘More than a Painting’ Art Class

Create a painting while learning facts about the world’s most famous artists in “More Than a Painting” art class.

Nancy Mitchell will offer two classes. The first class is Wednesday, April 3. from 9 a.m. to noon and the second class is Thursday, April 4, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Registration is $45/SCHF members and $50/Non-members for each class.

Classes suit both artists and beginners. The students leave with a finished art piece to hang in their home at the end of their class.

Mitchell has been teaching art for 35 years. As an educator and artist, she practices a variety of media including basic drawing, batik workshops and charcoal.

Cooking with Herbs Workshop April 8

Whether you grow your own herbs or buy them fresh, you’ll come away from this demonstration with many simple techniques and recipes with a few of the most common culinary herbs. Bring your note pad, your taste buds and your appetite to this workshop. You will sample all of the recipes that will be prepared for a full course meal. Washing, drying and freezing herbs will also be reviewed.

Presented by William Furlong, this workshop is Monday, April 8, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Lebanese Cooking with Lana

Join us for Lebanese Cooking with Lana, a hands-on cooking experience. The class will prepare Tabooli, a delicious salad made with tomatoes, parsley, green onions, and cracked wheat. The class will also prepare Kibbee, a meat dish made with lean meat, onions, wheat, and pine nuts. Lana will treat the class to Baklava for dessert!

The class will be held Thursday, April 25, from 5:30-8 p.m.
