Vicksburg Warren School District students who participate in the culinary arts program through the Career and Technical Education program at Hinds Community College, participated recently in a mock food truck challenge on Hinds’ Vicksburg campus.

The event featured various “food trucks” and as many culinary dishes.

The trucks were designed and constructed by the students to match the theme of their ware and ranged from gumbo to paninis to curried chicken dishes and more.

Attendees paid $5 each to sample the foods and a team of judges selected the winning team.

The first place winners, Sauce it Up, served mango habanero wings. The second place team, The Coop, offered Mexican grilled chicken with caramelized onions and roasted bell pepper mayo.

The team Aye Caribe placed third with their dish of Trinidadian Curry Chicken with rice and peas.

An honorable mention went to Purple’s Cajun Kitchen for their chicken and sausage Gumbo.

The winners won cash prizes totaling $1,000 raised through the entrance fee to the event.

“This is a great example of how we are making learning fun and relevant.” said VWSD superintendent Chad Shealy. “The skills that these students are learning can be transferred in a meaningful way to career and life.”
