Dorothy Lee Smith Mayfield

Mrs. Dorothy Lee Smith Mayfield was born Sept. 11, 1930, in Jefferson County. She entered eternal rest on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2020, at her home surrounded by family.

Dorothy was a loving, devoted wife to her husband, the late Rev. Henry Mayfield Sr. for 66 years. She served as first lady and mother of the churches he pastored. She was a member of Mount Zion Eagle Lake Church pastored by Rev. Luster Lacey.

She graduated from Jefferson County schools and studied psychology at Tougaloo College. She was employed with Mississippi Action for Progress (Headstart) for 33 years and retired in 1999.

She was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Henry Mayfield Sr.; mother, Ruby Lee McAllister Smith; father, George Earl Smith Sr.; daughter, Catherine Mayfield Maness; grandsons, Eric Mayfield and Jonquil Lee Mayfield; great- granddaughter, Cynthia Higgins; sisters, Katie Smith Larry and Doris Smith Odom; brothers, George Earl Smith Jr. and Franklin Theodore Smith.

She is survived by six daughters, Mary Mayfield Logan, Linda (Garland) Mayfield Cary, Henrietta Mayfield Spates, Frances Mayfield Lacey and Cynthia (Bill) Mayfield Brown, all of Vicksburg and Vera Mayfield Lawyer of Pensacola, Fla.; six sons, Henry (Rosalyn) Mayfield Jr., Michael (Bertha) Mayfield Sr., Rev. Gregory (Lynniese) Mayfield, Harold (Sandra) Mayfield and Vincent Mayfield, all of Vicksburg, and Donald Mayfield of New York, N. Y.; sisters, Irene Smith Mayfield, Pearl Smith Thomas, Delores Smith Harrington, Shirley Smith and Gladys Smith, all of Vicksburg; one brother, Willie Henry Smith Sr. of Vicksburg; 30 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, 2020, at the Vicksburg City Auditorium with Rev. A. J. Williams officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be Saturday, January 18, 2020, at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home from 4 to 7 p.m. with family present from 6 to 7 p.m., and at the City Auditorium on Sunday from noon until the hour of service.
