As of Wednesday, the Vicksburg Police Department has issued 14 tickets to people for violating the city’s 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew that went into effect Monday.

The curfew prohibits people from being on public streets or in any public place during those hours unless they are traveling to or from work or seeking medical assistance. Medical workers, first responders and law enforcement are exempt.

The curfew is part of the city’s COVID-19 Civil Emergency Proclamation that is in effect for 14 days.

While most residents have respected the curfew, police department public information officer Capt. Mike Bryant said Monday night officers issued several warnings and one ticket for violating the curfew. Tuesday night, 13 tickets were issued. 

Many of those cited said they thought if they were in a vehicle, the curfew did not apply. Bryant said the curfew applies to anyone on a public street unless traveling to or from work or seeking medical assistance.

Violation of the curfew, or any provision of the emergency proclamation, is a misdemeanor and can be fined up to $1,000.
